Hugh Chignell 2009: Key Concepts in Radio Studies

Notes

-Can each requirement demonstrate a radiogenic quality?

-Yes.

-How? What techniques would this involve?

Environmental sound

In radio production, and in particular on location, the sound quality of the environment is an important factor. This is partly determined by the reflective properties of surfaces and their distance from the microphone (Starkey, 2004a: 11).

Acoustics allow the listener to ‘hear space’ or, to put it differently, ‘space is created acoustically’ (Shingler and Wieringa, 1998: 56).

If the sounds are produced in a studio and all resonance is deadened then these sounds seem to occupy the same space as that of the listener, replicating the acoustic qualities of most people’s homes, where typically sounds are deadened by carpets, wallpaper, curtains and furniture. (Shingler and Wieringa, 1998: 56)

Co-presence

One of the main ideas emerging from this work is the idea of the shared experience of listening or viewing at the same moment in time and the sense of others being present (or ‘co-present’) with us in that activity.

Intimacy

In her ‘chats’ with callers about their personal problems, Raeburn established a bond of intimacy using the full repertoire of ‘para-social interaction’; in other words the characteristics of intimacy in face-to-face interaction (sincerity, attentiveness, empathy, caring) but performed over the air.

Liveness

Ellis makes the point that its live quality was extremely important, ‘live performance gave television a direct and intimate link with its audience, and this link became one of the defining characteristics of broadcast television’

Recent developments in technology and in the economics of radio production have led to an increase in pre-recorded DJ speech on commercial radio stations.

Practically, if used without regulatory control, at the extremes automation could enable a whole radio station to broadcast without any presenters or technical operators at all, or to appear to have the same presenter broadcasting 24 hours a day.

Liveliness possesses the same qualities as liveness in that it gives the impression of unscripted speech, which has an unpredictable and spontaneous quality and is delivered to an audience co-present in time.

Read:Thomas De Quincey, 1823: ‘On the knocking on the gate in ‘Macbeth’, London Magazine.

On the Knocking On the Gate in ‘Macbeth,’ De Quincey explained that the knocking on the door was striking because it brought people back to real life from a vast transition. When the audience sees Duncan’s murder, they are in a state of shock, a moment that makes them hold their breath or freeze. At times of significant change, people remain silent. A knock breaks the silence that ensues on the door, and the viewer is quickly brought back to reality. This method creates a sense of warping time.

If we want to go through the radio, maybe we can do some white space, and then we can use Floye to pull the audience back from the white space. Or we can only use some pictures to help make the audience feel more involved.

The pictures on radio

“The pictures are better on radio”Do you agree?

I think it depends on what people listening.

I’m listening to a radio play now. When I open the radio app, there are too many radios plays. I’ll the picture will select it instead of choosing blindly. When people are listening to the same type of thing, the images are better on the radio.

In contrast to radio or car radio, each FM has its theme. At this time, pictures’ effect is not that much because people will listen to what they are interested in most of the time.

Except when it’s necessary(we must use pictures to help the audience), I think pictures can only play a small role in radio. Because radio in some ways is auditory enjoyment. It’s not really about what we see, it’s about what we hear.

Radio Experience

I didn’t have much experience listening to the radio, but my parents loved listening to music on the car radio when they were driving. The music in the car radio is often light and rhythmic, and the singer’s voice can make me feel comfortable but not sleepy.

The last time I heard the radio was one the taxi. It’s a very famous piano song, named Moonlight (Suite Bergamasque L.75:III). The author is Debussy who created the modern “Impressionism” music style (This music style is full of fantasy color.)

Project

Idea Process

– I saw a lot of collages done by Lisa Busby, so I made some collages to enlighten my mind

idea 2

– I had an inspiration while watching a video (TV show). Because the constant channel changing causes different sounds to combine… Maybe this can be the subject of my project

process

Outcome

Final collage
Draft

– After deciding on the theme, I started to make or record the music I needed.

-Rearrange all the materials I need and add them together to form the final outcome.

Reflective

I learned a lot in this project. From the initial ideas to the final outcome, I was been attracted to sound arts. I love the feeling that I can learn new things while writing about the artists (which I can add to my work).

I used new musical Instruments to complete this project, so there are might be some unskilled places or not perfect places in this project. But I will study hard and hope to master this equipment perfectly before the coming of the next project.
The recording equipment recorded everything in my life and gave me a kind of playback feeling.

something about this project

The creation of a world in people’s minds using fragmented sound

What people hear is much richer than what they see. When sound travels into our ears, a virtual picture will be created in our minds based on our past experiences and creativity. Compared to what we see, the sound appears to be more abstract. For example, it is hard to reaffirm that the same sound is produced by the same object. This is the amazing part of a sound: you’d have to speculate before you see the sound generator on your own.

Sound walk

We closed our eyes and only used our ears to feeling the park near Forest Hill.

I think this walk just like an adventure of sound. It’s really interesting to use the ear to feel the nature of the objects around me.

Because of the lack of vision, I was a little afraid that I would fall or bump into objects at first. But as I gradually got used to this feeling, I found that my hearing became more sensitive. I could hear more ambient sounds.

I really love the feeling of being surrounded by sound.
